Policy priorities and challenges for health and social care in England

Date    : Thursday, 5th May 2016 (10.00-16.00)

Venue : University of Manchester, Jean McFarlane Building, Oxford Road

Keynote speaker: Nigel Edwards (Chief Executive, Nuffield Trust)

Since the passing of the Health and Social Care Act in March 2012, the UK health policy landscape has been changing rapidly. Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) have been developing and changing their role, taking on responsibility for varying levels of primary care commissioning and moving toward greater involvement in the commissioning of specialised services. At the same time, NHS England’s Five Year Forward View has changed the policy agenda, with a focus upon the development of new models of care which bring together different types of provider organisations across traditional boundaries.  Finally, GP practices under pressure are starting to work together in Federations, and Devolution of responsibility for health and social care to city and county regions is gathering pace. All of these developments focus heavily upon integration and co-operation, with competition between providers much less prominent in policy discourse.

This event will explore evidence relevant to these policy developments and challenges, focusing on what is known about collaborative working, governance of complex organisations, budget pooling, new forms of contracting, new forms of provider, integrated care etc. We invite interested researchers to submit abstracts covering a broad range of relevant themes, and would welcome contributions drawing relevant international comparisons. The focus of the day will be upon stimulating discussion about how existing evidence can illuminate the issues facing the NHS. Speakers will be allocated 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion

This one-day event is hosted by Health Policy & Politics Network and NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester.
